Benue State Police have on Friday killed three suspected robbers during a gun duel at Afia in the Ukum Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, in a statement on Sunday, confirmed the incident.

Anene said, “On October 14, 2022, around 2.30am, a distress call was received from Afia, Ukum Local Government Area, that armed robbers were robbing in the area.

“A patrol team was deployed in the area swiftly. On reaching the scene, the robbers engaged the police in a gun duel

“Three of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were confirmed dead, while other suspects escaped with wounds.”

She listed items recovered from the suspects to include one locally-made pistol loaded with five rounds of live ammunition, a machete, and some items suspected to be charms.

The police spokesperson stated that efforts were ongoing to apprehend fleeing members of the gang.
